We've been having this problem with squirrels getting into our bird feeder.
The birds that frequent our feeder do not like them ... it's funny to watch them out there squaking at the squirrels to leave. It's as if they are saying ... this is our feeder ... now leave!
The other day I went to take a picture of the FIVE squirrels that were on the feeder. This picture is so blurry because I took the picture through the window screen. As you can see, I only got a picture of the final one jumping down.
This is why my husband is an engineer ... he figured out a way to keep the squirrels off of the feeder. He put an old plant pot on it. If the squirrels try to shimmy up the pole, there is no way they can make it up as the pot blocks their access. It may not look very pretty ... but our goal is to feed the birds ... not the squirrels.
Mike = 1 Squirrels = 0
Way to go Mike!He's a Smarty!!
ReplyDeleteThe squirrels are beautiful though!
We have so many in our yard I buy the corn or peanuts for Cole to feed them:))
Have a GREAT day Missy!

The Navy uses much the same solution to keep rats from running up from the docks onto their ships. I notice too, that you have a humming bird feeder---I find sitting on my pation watchng the hummers come and go from the feeder rather soothing.
ReplyDeleteWay to go Mike. When we lived in the apartments, we put our cockatiel out on the patio and the squirrels would try to get into his cage for his seeds. Even when we screened in the patio, they tried to get through the screens. I finally got them some corn and they left our bird alone. Enjoy your birds.

Try putting up a squirrel feeder at the other end of the yard. My Mom has one and is fun to watch. They don't bother the bird feeder because they have their own feed and they like it better. Just an idea.
ReplyDeleteThere are two, 2, TWO ways to go here folks.
ReplyDelete1) do like Judi said and feed the squirrels. We place peanuts and sunflower seeds out and watch the squirrels. They now come to our door and wait for us, but they never, never go to the bird feeders now.
2) sprinkle FOX URINE beneath your birdfeeders.
It's a perfect squirrel repellant and also works for those intrusive humans you don't like.
I would choose.......ah...... ONE!
the squirrels need to eat too :)
